León is also a land of vineyards from time immemorial. Regarding El Bierzo, around 2000 years ago Pliny the Elder and Strabo already referred to the existence of vineyards in the area. The vineyards from El Bierzo skyrocketed in the medieval monasteries. With time, production grew in popularity and quantity, becoming one of the mainstays of the local economy. The grape used is Mencía, for red wines, and Doña Blanca and Godello for white wines. References to another vineyard area of León, which encompasses the river banks of Esla and Cea rivers, date back to the 11th century, with news about the harvests that supplied the monasteries in Sahagún. The particularity of this land, and what makes it different from other wine-making territories in the world, is its native grape Prieto Picudo.
