Council of Astorga

Region: Montañas del Teleno
City: Astorga
BIC date: 02-July-1992
Historical facts:

Monumento

The council building was planned out by architect Francisco de Lastra in 1675, and its construction began in 1683.

The building counts with two towers and a bell gable, containing coats of arms and sculptures at the façade. In the upper part, there is a picturesque clock in which two Maragatos (this is the name for people from the area, La Maragatería), Juan Zancuda and Colasa, display the hours in an original way. The clock preserves the famous standard of clavijo.

It has three levels, the third one being on the side towers. The access to the building is through a rounded arch flanked by fluted columns.

At the lower floor there are four spaces acting as balconies. From the first floor there is an access to the forge balcony that extends across the façade.

The towers bear the coat of arms of the Marquis of Astorga next to the city’s coat of arms.

The building was recently restored.
