Church of la Virgen Peregrina
Region: Adescas
City: Sahagún
BIC date: BIC: June 3rd, 1931
This 12th century, Mudejar church used to be an old, Franciscan convent whose church and part of the cloister are still preserved. The convent was abandoned in 1835 due to the expropriation of religious properties. The church gets its name from the image of Mother Mary dressed as a pilgrim it used to keep inside. Formerly known as La Roldada, it can now be found at the museum of Sahagún, at the Benedictine convent in the town.
The church has just one nave, with five sections, an apse and chapels from the 14th century onwards. Diego Gómez de Sandoval’s has plaster-covered, Mudejar walls. The double-floor gallery attached to the outer part of the wall is from the 18th century. The presbytery is covered by a quarter sphere vault representing Rome’s embrace: an allusion to the brotherhood between Franciscans and Benedictines. It is temporarily closed due to refurbishment and restoration at Centro de Documentación Camino de Santiago.
