Historical facts:

Fachada Castillo

Perched on top of a sheer hill, its imposing, elegant and watchful image dominates the town of Valencia de Don Juan and the Esla River Meadows.

This beautiful, large castle owes its name to “Coyanza”, the name this town bore during the 11th and 12th centuries. This was an old settlement of Roman origins.

The castle was built in the 15th century by the Acuñas, Counts of Valencia, at an Iron Age settlement. It was above the ruins of a previous fortress, destroyed by Almanzor in 996.

It is flanked by tower-looking turrets that conceal the Homage Tower, whose corners and front parts are adorned with circular turrets. There are also Gothic ornaments in one of its windows.

The Council of Coyanza was celebrated in this castle in 1050. Old Coyanza was populated and fortified by Fernando II of León in the second half of the 12th century.

Valencia began to be called “de Don Juan” after being donated to prince Don Juan, son of King Alfonso X.
